ENCINO, CA (June 18, 2013) … Iconic television star William Shatner has been given the “Video Legend” Award by the Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA) in recognition of his extraordinary career and the popularity of his work on home video, EMA announced today. The award was presented by EMA during its 2013 Independent Product Market at the Marriott Marina del Rey in Marina del Rey, California.

“William Shatner is one of the most-recognizable and popular stars of television and he continues to delight audiences with his diverse choices of roles,” noted Mark Fisher, President & CEO of EMA. “It is an honor to recognize his contribution to the medium and his enduring popularity.”

William Shatner has cultivated a career spanning more than 50 years as an award-winning actor, director, producer, writer, recording artist, horseman, and philanthropist.

Shatner’s latest project is The Captains Close Up. This five-episode mini-series provides an in-depth look at each the actors who have played Star Trek’s Captain Kirk since Shatner originated the role (Sir Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula, and Chris Pine) through the eyes of the man who played the first Captain more than 45 years ago.

The series was directed by William Shatner and produced by Le Big Boss Productions, Inc. in association with Epix, 455 Films, Ballinran Entertainment and Love Lake Productions. Entertainment One will release The Captains Close Up on DVD August 13, 2013.

In 1966, Shatner originated the role of “Captain James T. Kirk” in the television series Star Trek.  The series spawned a feature film franchise, and Shatner returned as Captain Kirk in seven of the Star Trek movies, one of which he directed.

Shatner played the title role in the hit television series T.J. Hooker before hosting television’s first reality-based series, Rescue 911.

He won Emmys and a Golden Globe for his portrayal of eccentric lawyer “Denny Crane” on both The Practice and Boston Legal.  He received four more Emmy nominations as well as other Golden Globe and SAG Award nods.

Most recently, he starred in $#*! My Dad Says.

Shatner has been successful in another area – horse breeding.  A longtime dedicated breeder of American Quarter horses, he has had enormous success with the American Saddlebred, developing and riding world champions and has won numerous world championships in several equine events.  His passions for horses and philanthropy were united when he started the Hollywood Charity Horse Show.  The annual event benefits Los Angeles-based children’s charities.
